TESTIMONIALS

An excellent read, I couldn`t put it down from start to finish. I`d often wondered what it would be like to work in Human Resources and about the different types of events and incidents that they would have to deal with. Some of these stories are fascinating, some sad and some just downright funny. I thoroughly recommended it anyone whether interested in Human Resources or not!   Gill

"A really funny and interesting read that shows great insight into the wierd and wonderful world of being involved in HR management. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone within HR or even further a field"

"Wyndham, clearly a seasoned and top-grade HR professional with many years of experience at the HR coal face, lays bare the full and enthralling range of often bizarre situations in which an HR executive finds himself. The result is a roller-coaster ride of “warts and all” stories that often rendered this reader open-mouthed in the rush to get to the invariably compelling nub of the individual “real life” case studies, each one a testimony to a challenging career in the HR firing line.

Refreshingly devoid of political correctness, the book is an “honest appraisal” from a self-effacing, modest but obviously heavy-weight professional who has not only lived through but had to manage - on occasions with an iron fist, on others with a soft hand - some of the most testing and often tragic of HR problems.

On the part of the HR professional, and as a testimony to the very best in that often derided and slated of professions, the phrase “firm but fair” seems to leap out from the narrative at every turn. His human side shines through time and again, reflected in his sensitive and highly responsible treatment - or should I say “rescue” - of a female employee from the third world who had been effectively imprisoned out of office hours as a sex worker by her demonic British husband. On the other hand, his courage, innate sense of right and wrong and oft-required firmness shine through in equal measure, evidenced by his consistent refusal to let “slackers” off the hook, and when holding firm in the face of huge pressure in a bogus racial discrimination case in front of a packed Tribunal court room with the media looking on.

From the employee’s standpoint, the book sublimely conveys the following message through the telling of riveting story after story: “Put in a fair day’s shift and behave decently, and you will be treated fairly and compassionately by HR when you have genuine problems”.

Finally, I would suggest that this book is a “must read” for any HR student or nascent professional. It will either inspire them or make them run a mile. What it will do above all is give aspiring HR professionals a very direct and honest account of what it is like to be in the HR hot seat at a senior level.

As a layman I too learnt a lot from the author’s case studies. Never again will I ignorantly utter those words “bl--dy HR”!

I guarantee you, pick this book up and you won’t put it down".
